Case study: MEERT, secret of success

The prestigious chocolate confectioner in Lille has delighted the taste buds of connoisseurs and gourmets around the world for over two centuries. The number of its genuine and refined specialties is always surprising.

Its partnership with Roquette places it in the market for chocolates with no added sugar. This new experience for Meert constitutes yet another challenge in a field it already masters, reconciling tradition and innovation, and provides a further occasion to prove its skill.

Meert’s most celebrated product is the filled wafer preferred by General de Gaulle and Marguerite Yourcenar. Over the years, Meert developed its range of confectioneries to include chocolate, candies and fine bakery such as cakes, pastries and ice cream.

Meert is the “mecca” of sweet products for Taste and Pleasure.
Its shop, founded in 1849, is located in downtown Lille, in the North of France. They also export to Paris, Dubai, Asia and many more countries to come.

Meert principally targets women aged 30-60, who are looking for pleasure and gift ideas.

Maltitol was first studied by Meert to meet consumer demand for reduced-sugar alternative. This was an ideal opportunity for two companies interested in Taste and Quality to join forces.

Two years later, Meert has expanded its range to include reduced in sugar wafers, sugar free chocolate and reduced in sugar cakes. Maltitol’s ease of use has also enabled Meert to create an excellent sugar free caramel. Maltitol allows Meert to replace sugar without affecting taste, which is the first key point for consumers.

"The skates involved were considerable: finding an alternative of choice that has the same flavour as sugar, and reacts in the same way: maltitol does and is amazingly easy to use; I treat it just like sugar, I don't change my way of working the chocolate in any way whatsover; and the end result is just the same" says Olivier Simon, Meert Master Chocolate-maker.

Even skeptics are totally convinced after tasting the product, and admit that wellness can be associated with taste and pleasure.
The consequence is added volume and added value for Meert.

Maltitol is authorized in Europe as a sweetener and a bulking agent. Labeling is very easy and Roquette support is available if needed.
